Aegli Hotel Volos
The oldest hotel in Volos, on Argonafton Street about 230 m from the ferry quay for Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos

About this hotel
Aegli is the oldest hotel in Volos: the Aegli of 1938 joined with the Pallas, opened in 1928, and the building now faces the working harbour from 24 Argonafton Street. The quay for the Sporades ferries is about 230 m away and the train station less than a kilometre. Choose the room with care: the 19 Superior rooms face the interior, and the 41 Deluxe rooms are sold either city side or sea side, so for the harbour view book a junior suite or a Deluxe sold as sea view. The seven family rooms have separate bedrooms. Breakfast is the point reviewers praise most, and for an early boat the hotel prepares a breakfast basket if you ask the evening before. The hotel holds the Green Key environmental label.

Our take
Aegli joins two of the oldest hotels in Volos, the Aegli of 1938 and the Pallas of 1928, and stands on the harbour about 230 m from the quay of the Sporades ferries. Rated 9.2 from 1,341 reviews, it is the hotel I would pick for one night before or after the boat to Skiathos, Skopelos or Alonissos, or as a city base for Pelion. Two things to know before booking: the 19 Superior rooms face the interior, so for the harbour view book a junior suite or a Deluxe sold as sea view, and there is no hotel car park, so drivers use the public car park at the port. With no pool and no beach outside the door, I would not book it for a swimming holiday.
- ✓If the view matters, read the room name: the 19 Superior rooms face the interior, the Deluxe rooms are sold city view or sea view, and the junior suites look over the harbour.
- ✓Ferries to Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos leave from the city-centre port in front of the hotel; sailings thin out outside summer, so read the season's timetable on Ferryhopper before fixing your nights in Volos.
- ✓With an early boat, ask reception the evening before for a breakfast basket, so you can walk to the quay without missing breakfast.
- ✓There is no hotel car park: drivers leave the car in the public car park at the port, across from the hotel.
- ✓Eat as Volos does, at the waterfront tsipouradika: each round of tsipouro arrives with a different meze plate, often octopus, mussels or small fried fish, and you can order dishes without drinking.
- ✓Nea Anchialos airport, about 24 km away, has limited and seasonal flights; otherwise plan the trip by road from Athens or Thessaloniki.
Why we love it
- A harbour address about 230 m from the Sporades ferries
- Family rooms with separate bedrooms
- The waterfront tsipouradika and the promenade to Anavros beach right outside
Why guests love itAegli's seven family rooms have separate bedrooms, so parents and children each get a door to close. The buffet breakfast, the point reviewers praise most, makes an early ferry to the Sporades easier, and for a very early sailing the hotel prepares a breakfast basket if you ask the evening before. The quay is about 230 m away, walkable with luggage. There is no pool, so the day happens outside: the flat promenade suits pushchairs and scooters, and Anavros, the city beach, is about half an hour's walk east past Agios Konstantinos park. For shallower water, Alykes beach lies a few kilometres from the centre. I would use Aegli for one or two nights between Pelion and the islands rather than for a full beach week.
