Hotels in Volos

Volos splits into three bases. The central seafront, from the port to the Argonafton promenade, puts you on foot from the ferry quay, the archaeological museum and the evening tsipouradika, where each small carafe of tsipouro arrives with its own meze. Anavros, east of the centre, is the city beach with a park behind it, a long walk along the water from the port, and the area where Domotel Xenia sits on Plastira street. Agria, further east along the Pelion coast, has the resort hotels with pools, Valis Resort among them, and is the gateway to beaches such as Kala Nera. Getting there: the KTEL bus from the Liosion terminal in Athens runs direct, the train needs a change at Larissa, and Nea Anchialos airport, southwest of the city, mostly handles seasonal flights. Ferries for Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos run all year, with far more sailings in summer, and usually call at Skiathos first. Spring and September are the sweet spot; in July and August the Pelion villages above the city, such as Portaria and Makrinitsa, are cooler for evenings. The trap: expecting a cove at your door in the centre. Among the hotels listed here, the most reviewed are Azur Hotel Volos (9.1 from 1,682 reviews), Aegli Hotel Volos (9.2 from 1,341) and Volos Palace (9.1 from 1,158). Empress Luxury Residences scores 9.7 from 974 reviews, Port View Suites and Volos Inn Hotel 9.6, Magnes Hotel 9.5. Domotel Xenia (8.5) is the one on Plastira street near Anavros, and Valis Resort Hotel (8.1 from 785) is the resort in Agria. Eight sit on the beachfront, among them Filoxenia Hotel, Hotel Jason, To Giouli, Hotel Karagianni and Thelxis. For the lowest scores, 7.7 and under, I would read recent reviews first.

For a first night in Volos, I would sleep on the seafront between the port and the Argonafton promenade: the Sporades ferries leave from the quay in front of you. Beach lovers do better around Anavros, the city beach east of the centre, and families who want a resort pool look to Agria, further east along the Pelion coast. Volos is a working port of Magnesia at the foot of Mount Pelion, not an island village: it suits island hoppers and Pelion explorers, less so travellers who want sand under the balcony every morning.

Family-friendly aparthotel with mountain views and fully equipped kitchens

It sits 1.7 km from Panthessaliko Stadium rather than by the sea. Guests give it a perfect 10 across 22 reviews.

Aegli Hotel Volos
Volos

Aegli Hotel Volos

4.6· 1341 reviews

The oldest hotel in Volos, on Argonafton Street about 230 m from the ferry quay for Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos

Why guests love it

Aegli's seven family rooms have separate bedrooms, so parents and children each get a door to close. The buffet breakfast, the point reviewers praise most, makes an early ferry to the Sporades easier, and for a very early sailing the hotel prepares a breakfast basket if you ask the evening before. The quay is about 230 m away, walkable with luggage. There is no pool, so the day happens outside: the flat promenade suits pushchairs and scooters, and Anavros, the city beach, is about half an hour's walk east past Agios Konstantinos park. For shallower water, Alykes beach lies a few kilometres from the centre. I would use Aegli for one or two nights between Pelion and the islands rather than for a full beach week.

The bar, restaurant and 24-hour front desk cover late arrivals and simple dinners. It is a city-centre hotel rather than a resort, so beach time means a short trip out. I would use it as a base for day trips up Mount Pelion. A 9.1 score over 1,158 reviews is strong.

Volos

Azur Hotel Volos

Four-star with family rooms in central Volos, a short hop from the Sporades ferries

Why guests love it

Azur works for families as a practical city stop rather than a holiday hotel. Family rooms, balconies and a buffet breakfast cover the basics. The town beach at Anavros, about 1.7 km away, slopes gently into the water, which is easy with small children, and the archaeological museum sits right behind it for a cooler hour. There is no pool, so summer afternoons mean the beach or a trip into the Pelion hills. I would book two nights here between a ferry to the Sporades and the mountain villages.

Air-conditioned rooms have private bathrooms and sea views, some with a balcony or terrace. The lush garden and outdoor seating area offer shade between swims, and a continental buffet breakfast is served each day. The setting is simple rather than luxurious, but an 8.9 score from 571 reviews shows guests are pleased.

Beachfront elegance with sea views and a full wellness spa

Why guests love it

Domotel Xenia Volos is a five-star city and convention resort set directly on the Volos beachfront, and it describes itself as family-friendly. For children the main draws are the beach on the doorstep and the indoor pool in the wellness centre, which works in any season. Rooms face the city or the sea, so I would ask for a sea view. Conferences can make it busy at times, and it is a large hotel rather than an intimate one. An 8.5 score from 664 reviews is good.

For families the draw is simplicity: breakfast is included, there is a beach café, and the sea is right outside. Rooms and suites have air conditioning and a flat-screen TV. Sea view

What to expect

  • The main mainland port for Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos, with ferries all year.
  • Anavros, the city beach, reached on foot along the seafront east of the centre.
  • Agria, east of the city on the Pelion coast, for resort pools and the road to Kala Nera.
  • Tsipouradika, where each carafe of tsipouro comes with a new plate of meze.
  • Direct KTEL buses from the Liosion terminal in Athens, and trains with a change at Larissa.

Local tips

  • For Skiathos, Skopelos or Alonissos, sleep on the seafront the night before: the ferry quay is in the city centre, and most sailings call at Skiathos first, so Alonissos is the longest leg of the line.
  • The narrow-gauge Pelion train, the Moutzouris, runs from Ano Lechonia to Milies on a mountain line of about 15 km; it is a seasonal tourist service, so check Hellenic Train before building a day around it.
  • If you ride the train, give Milies itself a couple of hours: walk to the church of the Taxiarches and the village library, one of the oldest in Greece.
  • In late summer 2024 Blue Flags were temporarily withdrawn from several Volos beaches, Anavros among them, after dead fish reached the Pagasetic Gulf; look at the current Blue Flag list before planning city beach days.
  • Order tsipouro by the small carafe in a tsipouradiko and let the meze arrive with each round; these places fill late, so a table at nine is an early dinner here.
  • In July and August, drive up to Portaria or Makrinitsa on the slopes of Pelion for dinner: the villages sit high above the gulf and the evenings are cooler than on the waterfront.
  • Hotels close to the Krafsidonas riverbed were in the area flooded by Storm Daniel in September 2023; read the most recent reviews on access and parking before booking one.

Where to stay

…

FAQ

Is Volos worth staying in?

Yes, if you treat it as a real port city and a base rather than a resort. Volos gives you the ferries to the Sporades, the tsipouradika on the waterfront, the Pelion villages above the city and the Pelion train within reach. It is less suited to travellers who want a beach right outside the room every morning: the city beach is Anavros, and the resort pools are further east in Agria.

Where should I stay in Volos for the beach?

Stay around Anavros, the city beach east of the centre, if you want to walk to the sand and still reach the waterfront in the evening. For hotels with large pools and beaches such as Kala Nera along the road, look at Agria, further along the Pelion coast. Note that Anavros lost its Blue Flag temporarily in summer 2024, so check its current status.

How do I get from Athens to Volos?

The simplest option is the direct KTEL bus from the Liosion terminal in Athens to Volos, with no change. By rail, Hellenic Train services require a change at Larissa. Nea Anchialos airport, southwest of the city, handles mostly seasonal flights, so most travellers arrive by bus, train or car from Athens or Thessaloniki.

Can you take a ferry from Volos to Skiathos?

Yes. Volos is the main mainland port for the Sporades, with ferries to Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos all year and many more sailings in summer. Skiathos is usually the first call, then Skopelos (Glossa and the main town) and Alonissos. Timetables change by season, so check the operator's schedule for your dates rather than an old one.

Was Volos affected by Storm Daniel?

Yes. In September 2023 Storm Daniel brought torrential rain to the Volos area; the Krafsidonas river overflowed in the city and the port and roads out of town were damaged. In late summer 2024, dead fish in the Pagasetic Gulf led to Blue Flags being withdrawn temporarily from several city beaches. Recent reviews are the best guide to how a given hotel and beach look now.

Is the Pelion train worth it?

It is a slow, scenic ride rather than transport: the Moutzouris covers about 15 km from Ano Lechonia to Milies through plane and oak forest, with a stop at Ano Gatzea. It runs as a seasonal tourist service, with dates set by Hellenic Train each year. Combine it with time in Milies, home to one of the oldest libraries in Greece.

Which Volos hotels have the best ratings?

Antheon Suites Volos has the top score, 10, but from only 22 reviews. Local Urban Living (9.6 from 664 reviews) and ESTEA Quality Living (9.6 from 133) follow, then δ193 (9.4 from 304), Aeson Premium Living (9.4 from 226) and 1910 Legacy Hotel (9.4 from 36). 1910 Lifestyle Hotel has 9.3 from 635 reviews, City Keys Volos 9.3 from 41, Nestia urban apartments 9.2 from 176 and Kostis Orange Resort 9.1 from 199. I trust a 9.3 from 635 reviews more than a 10 from 22.

Which Volos hotels have lower ratings?

Hotel Avra has 8.5 from 457 reviews, Hotel Nefeli 8.2 from 592, Hotel Kipseli 8.1 from 756 and Villa Miltiadis GreeceFiloxenia 8.1 from 646. At the bottom are Hotel Kalloni (7.7 from 495), Park Hotel (7.7 from 178) and Hotel Apolafsi (7.2 from 117). With these three I would read the most recent reviews on noise, upkeep and parking before booking, especially after the 2023 floods.
