Theta Boutique Hotel
Soundproofed rooms on Kyprou Street, two minutes from the Koum Kapi seafront

About this hotel
Theta stands at 30 Kyprou Street in Koum Kapi, the seafront district just outside the eastern walls of Chania's old town. The name comes from the Turkish for Gate of Sand, after the Sabbionara bastion, built by the Venetians in the 1530s, which still marks the end of the walls. The Akti Miaouli promenade, lined with cafés and tavernas, is two to four minutes from the door, and the old harbour about five. Rooms are air-conditioned and soundproofed, with a shower, a flat-screen TV and, in some, a balcony facing the sea or the mountains. Breakfast is served at a partner restaurant nearby, with a sea view, and is not offered from 1 November to 30 March. An airport transfer can be arranged for an extra charge; Chania airport is about 15 km away.

Our take
Theta sits at 30 Kyprou Street in Koum Kapi, outside the eastern Venetian walls, and holds a 9.6 from 1,168 reviews. The soundproofed rooms are the reason I would choose it: the Akti Miaouli promenade stays busy until late, and here you hear little of it. The old harbour is about five minutes away, close enough to walk to dinner and far enough to escape the crowds of the quay. There is no pool and no garden. It suits a couple or a light sleeper who wants the old town on foot; it does not suit anyone after a beach on the doorstep.
- ✓Walk west along Akti Miaouli to the Sabbionara bastion: the lion of Saint Mark is still carved on its front, and the harbour is just beyond.
- ✓The beach at Koum Kapi is a narrow strip with barely room for a towel; for a real swim, cross the old town to Nea Chora, sandy and shallow.
- ✓Ask for a sea-view balcony when booking: the mountain-view rooms face inland towards the White Mountains, not the water.
- ✓Order the airport transfer in advance if you land late: it costs extra, and the hotel is about 15 km from Chania airport.
Why we love it
- Soundproofing that keeps the late promenade out of your room
- Koum Kapi's cafés two minutes away, the harbour five
- Sea or White Mountains views from the balcony
Why guests love itWith children, Theta works for a family that wants calm nights and an easy walk to the old town. The soundproofing helps young sleepers in a district where the promenade stays lively in the evening, though breakfast, taken at a partner restaurant nearby, is not offered from November to March. Koum Kapi's seafront is pleasant for an evening stroll and an ice cream, but its beach is too small for a day of swimming with children; Nea Chora, sandy and shallow on the far side of the old town, is the better family beach. There is no pool or play area, so this is a base for exploring Chania rather than a hotel to spend the day in.
